A perilous WWII mission is recounted. It concerns a sea captain and his two grandchildren who transport a group of refugees to safety from a German-occupied island. In late 1943 German forces are advancing towards Dalmatian coast, forcing many people to flee to Allied or Partizan controled areas. The captain joins a convoy of boats to a free island, but has engine trouble and must turn back. Shot and captured by the Germans, he is helped by his two wards, though in the end he sacrifices himself so that they can escape to safety.
